and then I watched an episode of Above Suspicion and the main female character is a detective played by Kelly Reilly, who's the same person who played Mary Morstan in the Sherlock Holmes movies.

So of course I then plan out another Sherlock Holmes modern AU. )

I am now using rule 63! (and female!/male!) to denote opposite sex interpretations of characters. Because while I will probably always use genderswap/genderbent in my head, in fandom, which is generally a queer space, they have ambiguous and unfortunate erasing connotations.

As much as I am fond of AO3's 'Alternate Universe – Gender Changes' tag, I can't be bothered to type that out whenever I'm referring to a character in that situation. So rule63! and female!/male! it is then, and I hope that the latter's intended meaning is clear enough i.e. that it's an alternate universe interpretation and not a trans* intepretation.
grassangel: (ehh what)

31 fandoms that are, somehow, in my head, linked to each other.

To read:

- Fandoms with white inner rings are central fandoms in any of the other maps.
- Any fandom overlapping or residing another fandom operate by the same/similar rules or have thematic links.
- Striped backgrounds are purely for decoration. Outlined fandom names are for readability.
- A few fandoms appear twice. This is due to limits of space being what they are/the proximity of other fandoms connecting them to their other related fandoms would've required the bending of space/overlapping fandoms which they shouldn't.
-  Sandman and His Dark Materials, as well as a handful of other fandoms not represented, should in theory be all encompassing. I have not done this as it would give me a headache.

This is subject to change, as fandoms will be added and shifted, but it is nice to have a nice set of images to refer people to.

grassangel: (I choose you!)

Filling out the New Zealand election review submission form like it's an exam. Because I'm awkward like that and with questions phrased like "Should the 5% threshold be kept or changed? Why? If you recommend change, what should it be and why?" it's really hard not to. Although some questions are poorly worded, such as "Is this a problem, and what should be done to fix it?", as that invites people who don't think it's a problem to not even answer and thus makes it a question where there would be informal opinions/votes.

I love democracy though. It allows me to do such a thing as tell the electoral comission that I'd really like a lower threshold and that publicly alterable party lists would be rather nice.

Even if almost all the names on both the five-minute and full submissions pages seem to be men. :/

And yes, I'm not dead. Mostly because I am in an ongoing battle to clear my Chrome tabs out, and I log into LJ on Sleipnir. Also, all the fandom noise seems to have moved elsewhere/Tumblr, which makes me sad. Because Tumblr definitely has pretty, but it's so... noisy.
There is a link post burgeoning with links in the works though and several well overdue media-response posts.

But in the meantime, if you are a New Zealand person, go say something in the MMP review. Also, my tumblr is csgcreative. Note that I will only follow you if you reblog/post interesting things, so uh... yes. Please tell me if you have a tumblr anyway!

Whoo! My bi-yearly icon change around. I still need a few more I think. Something slashy, switch around the Pokemon one, another cute thing and maybe either something shiny and sciency.

ANYWAY. The episode.

Which had gloriously Neil Gaiman-y music even. )

Things that I am glad for from this episode. )

As a consequence of the TARDIS being put into a human, I now kind of ship... well, what I said in the title. Also, my hair can do crazy. We all know what that means. )

Tangentally, if I were to have a ride in the TARDIS... )

The unrelated bits at the end:
I keep hearing dubstep in TV programs. This is somewhat disconcerting, as it's a very NOT mainstream kind of genre. Except it kind of is, but not... it's somewhere between popular and obscure and bits of it float through and those floating through bits mystify me. Especially because they're original bits of dubstep, not dubstep mixes of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory songs or the lines the turrets say or Nyancat.

There should be a "I Want You Gone" and a "The Humans are Dead" mashup. I keep listening to the former and partway through singing "Binary solo! Zero zero one." during an instrumental bit.

Contains spoilers )

I want to read good N fanfiction now. PokeSpe fic as well. I AM SO HAPPY FANFICTION.NET HAS ADDED A WORLD FILTER.
Hmmm... I should do a meme type thing to finish off some fics. How about I post summaries/first lines and people pick things I should finish first? Except I also want to start new stuff like PokeSpe drabbles or maybe take requests.
grassangel: (OT3)
Sometimes, when reading HOLiC fics, especially ones concerning Doumeki and Watanuki - though sometimes I get it when reading about Himawari and Doumeki - I get the urge to write a essay or fic or something about what they all have for each other. Like how Doumeki has loyalty-protection-love for Watanuki, while Himawari has fondness-notquiteyearning-love for him. And then Himawari and Doumeki have this weird relationship where they're figuratively each other's only port in a storm, as their third is too dense to figure out he has anything but fondness for both of them, and thus the only option for physical intimacy but they're still colluding together to make a happy OT3 work out.

I kind of wish everything HOLiC wasn't quite so angsty.
grassangel: (Yuuko)
I saw it.

Somewhere, there is a very unhappy Dream wondering what the hell is happening to his realm. There also needs to be more crossover fic with HOLiC as well as stuff exploring thaumaturgical architecture/architectural thaumaturgy and the Khloidanikos (from the Doctrine of Labyrinths series).

It was not that confusing. I survived and manage to help map out a timeline for Tsubasa. Inception is... comparable, but doesn't involve nearly as many stable time loops or paradoxical almost incestuous relationships. Um... it may have also helped I went expecting it to be "IT WAS ALL A DREAM" and thus it was a bit less than what I had expected.

This is probably spoilery )

Also a very odd movie if you can, or have ever, lucid dreamed. You find yourself mentally shouting at the screen about denying the situation and just willing a change.
The sensation of exiting a dream is also more like falling [into a black hole and becoming infinitesimaly dense], not falling prompts the exiting of a dream.

There will be a fic post later. (First time in over a year~ oh god) Possibly just a link pointing to my fic comm, but maybe backed up here too.

I found one of Torchwood's only g-rated fics. Reception Difficulties

It was crossposted to [ profile] tardis_children, which is the cutest little comm in that it's for child friendly fic and discussion and things people have done with their kids and things their kids have done concerning Doctor Who.
There is a gorgeous illumination-style picture of the Bad Wolf.
There are some that I wouldn't let a five year old read because of big words and situations that I would just plain feel skeevy giving them to read or have read to them, but in general, it is very nice comm full of things to show to under-12s and perhaps a starting point for those a little older.

Oh and for those who are rather a bit older and just don't want to read porn.
(The second link there by the way, is a rather awesome Torchwood/Discworld crossover featuring the Nac Mac Feegle.)

Apparently young people do not read Greek myths any more. Which is why critics say Percy and the Lightning Thief is a good thing, as opposed to Hercules or Xena.
I am vaguely confused by this, as I knew who Zeus was before I was eight. Okay, so I can't name all the Argonauts but the fact that I know what the Elysian Fields are is apparently ODD.

Basically what I really wanted to say is: I'VE READ HERODOTUS, I KNOW MORE PLACE NAMES THAN YOU DO.

(This is vaguely aimed at the Doctor Who fandom/canon where appropriation of Greek names is rampant.)
(Also, the all-caps statement above does not apply to about half of my flist, as I know some of you could name all the Argonauts.)

So, End of Time and the start of a new season. Be warned, spoilers and opinions ahead.

End of Time, part one. )

End of Time, part two. )

On Matt Smith as the Doctor... )

TARDIS and other technical stuff )

On the episode itself )

Yes, EoT write up horribly late (and the Sarah Jane and Torchwood ones shall be done eventually I promise) but first episode of the new season... a bit less so.

Oh ninties

Tom the piper's son has a lot to answer for. Aside from stealing a pig and causing general mayhem, his rhyme also features in Beatrix Potter's 'Pigling Bland' and in what I'm obbiously currently catching up on, Kuroshitsuji.

That and I discovered, because I was being weird and this has been bothering me for a while, to look up Billie Piper's singing history. This is mostly because I once had to listen to one of her singles, on repeat, for three hours when I was 9/10. (I can also amusingly remember a music video, which may or may not have been hers it turns out, where there is DANCING IN ALLEYWAYS WITH POOFY DRESSES.)

And I learnt that she was rather popular in New Zealand (as in... all of her CDs were in the top 20 except for two) and that there was a track on the first Pokemon movie CD (the one that had no actual tracks from the movie, remember?) that was by her. It's... so very '90s.

Anyway, currently listening to all the English theme songs now. Oh god, nostalgia.
And oh god, the.... cheesiness.

The thing about the New Zealand news being obsessed with RTDs, or Ready-to-drink alcoholic beverages, is that my mind AUTOMATICALLY translates that into Russel T Davies. So I end up wondering for a moment why they want to ban an UK screenwriter, who probably does have an Agenda (notably the gay and the green it seems) but is otherwise harmless, until my brain catches up and realises they're talking about alcohol. (Alcohol being the glue that seems to hold together kiwi social interactions (because no one has heard of having fun and getting along apparently), which kind of sucks when you are a person who sees no appeal in that tingly alcoholic taste.)

Thank you fandom.

In more serious news, I have to come up with a dessert for my final assessment. I have narrowed it down to a few options, but I'm being horribly wishy washy about it, so if you could please take the following poll:

[Poll #1541931]

I ask this now because I will need to give my tutor an equipment list within the next week.
grassangel: (reading)
So, today was mostly spent in town with friends. Followed by an hour long talk/reading session by Neil Gaiman
Well, that and two and half hours spent waiting in line to get my copy of Coraline signed by said author. But now I have a picture of a rat drawn in that book and the possibilty that I slightly bewildered an author by thanking him for signing my book.

So I am happy and more than a bit tired and seriously considering bringing three litres of water as some people recommend when attending a fan gathering because I had a headache until I had some panadol half an hour ago.

And hoping very fervently that Neil Gaiman will come visit Wellington again and maybe talk about different stuff and read new things.

The next big fanthing that I will be possibly attending (but only if people (AKA friends, not just people I reconise from the cosplay picnic) I know are going) will be Armageddon, the local convention-like event. (It's officially an expo and most of the main floor is vendors. But it seems to be better this year, with more events organised, especially THREE cosplay ones.)
I am tempted to make a cosplay to make it worthwhile (Toeto version of Megurine Luka) but sewing and finding wig makes me just think that I may just finish my cat ears properly.
grassangel: (Hedgehog snuffles)
So... Neil Gaiman tweeted about this BBC Audiobooks America (I was all "Bebecaw-what?" for a moment before I realised it was BBC America. Which I find odd in itself, because America was all "Noooo! They be taking away our libertiez!" three hundred or so years ago but now some are going "Fuck yeah! Britain!" and slurping the culture up.) round-robin audiobook writing thing on Twitter. Not interested as I live on the other side of the world and thus TIME ZONES are my enemy, but I found it amusing I went 'Fuck no' at the Torchwood radio plays in the sidebar but went 'Oooh! Shiny' at the H2G2 one.

Unfortunately, I then looked over at my flist and saw a Bya/Ren fic being posted to at least three comms I follow and the Torchwood! No and Bleach slash combined and Renji's now bothering Ianto while Jack is befuddled by this person who is wholly focused on their paperwork and is TOTALLY SILENT AND IGNORING THE RENJI.

Slightly better than zombie pastry chefs but hey.
