The Timeless Children rewatch

Rewatching The Timeless Children and the Master really did just yoink the Doctor through the portal with him.
And I do wish it had been a longer shot so we could see him grab her hand. It'd be a neat parallel to the way the Twelfth Doctor had grabbed Missy's hand.

Also this episode really does show off how excellent Whittaker is as an actor. The sadness and conflict on her face the entire time she's with the Master!
Dhawan is excellent too; his Master is a little pleased with himself but similarly conflicted as well.

Really do wish the director had opted for more medium to long shots though. I want to see ALL of Whittaker and Dhawan's acting!

Toisin Cole's Ryan is such a sweetheart and I'll miss him when he goes. 😭 He's my favourite of the Thirteenth Doctor's companions and I love his relationship with the Doctor.

Once again more liveblogish than my yeah nah format. Starts out bullet points but quickly devolves into ranting paragraphs.

He ignores her, continuing to twist the cuff she'd slapped on him after the Unfathomable had turned on him. It's been upgraded from the one he'd put on her in the Vault and he hasn't found a way to take it off yet. He will, he always does, but until then he's stuck to the Doctor's side or restricted to her TARDIS.

"You looked nice in it," she adds, sitting down beside him, flicking the length of her coat back so she doesn't sit on it.

The Master's lip curls at her comment. Typical Doctor, remembering him as a past version he no longer was, that no longer existed except as a memory. He's fond of the old girl though, and she wouldn't have let her Doctor say that without comment so he says it for her. "Pig."

Stolen from tumblr which originated on twitter, and which I'm gently cross posting here.

I want to say I’m more dialogue heavy than what I've marked, but I know I write dialogue easily so I often go back and add all the description the dialogue deserves and it ends up being somewhat even if not leaning more towards description. I’m also working off the assumption that light edit = grammar and spell check and heavy edit = multiple drafts, so my minor rewrites of some paragraphs + spelling/grammar is what I’d consider on the light end but for most fic writers is probably in the middle.

Also it’s interesting that this is what I’m like currently. I used to be much more gen and canon-based than I am now, while I’ve moved slightly more towards having some kind of outline/structure. Or, rather, I can't complete fics if I don't have structure of some kind. Even if it is just a prompt or a particular scene I need to move towards.

I am not fond of the concept of the markings on Jotunn in the MCU as being natural. Markings are in nature for camouflage. They’re random, meant to blend in with the environment and that they can be used for identification is a secondary benefit.
Also, just like red hair in humans doesn’t necessarily mean a person has a temper, a certain set of markings on an animal doesn’t mean anything.
So I really dislike the concept of natural markings meaning something, even with the fact that Norse mythology is big on destiny and prophecy.

Now, I’ve lived in New Zealand all my life and while moko aren’t common, they aren’t an unfamiliar sight. As with most Maori art, the designs have or tell stories and are considered sacred treasures to be protected. Pre-European moko were done with a tool that was more chisel than needle and the resulting moko was a combination of scarification and tattoo.
So while I’m not of Maori descent, and you should not take the above as anything approaching expertise, I do appreciate the huge cultural significance behind moko and other markings other cultures make upon their skin.

Adding that depth of history to Jotunn culture and having it influenced by mythological prophecy felt important to me. There is meaning behind those markings and it implies they have art, tradition and a way of communicating those things to future generations. With them Jotunn aren’t uncivilised beasts and whether you layer the Aesir/Jotunn war with hints of other religious or cultural wars, Jotunn are no longer a faceless or emotionless species - they want what was stolen from them returned.

The repetition of making the markings is taken partially from another form of scarification, branding, and from the fact that hypertrophic scarring is short lived for most scars without interference. Also contributing to this is that body modifications are often used to symbolise important events and rites in a person’s life. Since a lot of these events are already forseen and marked at birth, the markings are reinforced when those events happen. This accounts for why Loki’s markings aren’t in high relief; he hasn’t had them re-cut since he was an infant.

The ritual exposure is a nod to the widely held gospel that Loki was abandoned, and a lot of historical cultures did use exposure as a way to dispose of unwanted or abnormal children.
However I’m borrowing more from the ancient Grecian school of thought that an exposed child could be saved by the will of the Gods through direct intervention or by the kindness of a stranger. The ritual exposure is intended to allow the fates/Norns to either gift the child with a long and successful life or taken to be nursed in the halls of Hel. (Because Hel is a realm of second chances and Hel is an incorrigible romantic.)

Boðólfr translates roughly to ‘battle wolf’, although the second part was meant as a nod to Áleifr which has connotations of 'inheritance/legacy’.

Jane's (and my own) poetry writing isn't great, but the poem at the end is both a haiku and an acrostic - the haiku stating that if Loki asks her to marry him, she'll say yes, while the acrostic repeats that yes. Just a bit of poetic fun that's appropriate for Asgard and its rituals

I conceive of Gallifreyan music as being the most baroque thing ever, so there’s a lot of organs and stuff. Since organs have so many keyboards, they generally two or more people to play them, and in the tradition of weddings, the four hands required to play are supposed to symbolise the four hearts of the two people being married. The two people playing are also supposed to be one from each of the couple’s houses, to really symbolise the two houses being joined together. (Missy condensing the song down so only two hands are needed is very much a ‘fuck you’ to that concept.)

Whatever you called them, tears in the fabric of time and space were usually harmless and closed themselves without consequence. The ones that didn’t successfully do so, the Doctor took it upon themselves to deal with, either closing them or making sure they were carefully monitored.

Over two dozen popping up all over Sheffield, large enough for a lone valdosaurus to appear in Graham’s garden and making one of the Hallamshire Police patrol vehicles go missing? That was worth her attention, though the number of them wasn’t their most worrying aspect.

The app the Doctor has installed on Ryan’s phone chimes, the fourth time in nearly as many minutes. It dings a few seconds later, indicating that the break in time has closed.

Their frequency was what had called the Doctor back to Sheffield off-schedule. It also made fixing whatever was causing them a priority. Before the Doctor can address their cause though, she needs to do something about the symptoms, stem the rate at which the occurrences are happening and hopefully give her more time before they reach a critical mass.

For that she needs Yorkshire’s finest cup of tea and her friends that aren’t currently keeping a prehistoric dinosaur occupied and away from the front garden.

The one thing I don't like about participating in democracy beyond voting in elections by writing emails to ministers and making submissions on Bills and their amendments, is that there's an awful lot of research and essay writing.
And unhappily you DON'T get a grade on it afterwards, or even comments on it from peers, so even though it's an awful lot like school work, you get none of the nice social recognition stuff for doing any of it

I mean there is the reward of helping the good thing get through or making sure the bad thing doesn't, but it's not nearly so satisfying as writing fic is. Or even poetry which you don't let anyone else see!

(Speaking of, I should research NZ magazines and such that publish poetry as somehow I find myself with lots of pieces that I quite like, but they are short and I only should research them, which means I won't)

There's a delightful line about Being Known in this fic I'm reading, and it strikes me there's different... polarities to Being Known.

There's fuckor, that deep terror/embarrassment of your soul being so deeply peered into.
Then there's the comforting one that has no name - someone knowing you well enough to order food for you, likes the same book as you for the same reason, gives you a gift for no other reason than they knew you'd like it, or the person you take one look at & go 'they're like me'.

Both are forms of being loved, but one is soft and comforting, while the other confronts you with truths about yourself which can be hard to face hearing from another person.

Ooof, things have obvious er... gotten hot enough about The Watch casting that Rhianna Pratchett had to state she’s no longer personally involved (though Narrativia is)

and my thoughts are sort of generally in line with this post, which is that while I am glad that the casting is diverse and am cheering that the actors got the parts, I am very very much looking askance at the casting director and producers for the particular choices they made for which characters. Like yay for a non-binary actor, but why not a trans woman actress? And I do sincerely hope that Sybil casting is only one half of the character’s casting and they’re keeping the time travel/alternate universes bit so that this is only a young Sibyl. (Never mind that Carcer should be a mirror of Vimes, just like Lily is that of Esme.)

Anyway, I’ll just be here, examining the questions I was asked when the BBC fan panel did surveys about the series and moaning that while I’d only mentioned Angel Coulby because I wanted to mention at least one other name, she’d actually be quite good

eta: And apparently even dudes who play MPQ (so a generally decent bunch of middle-aged, mostly white men who aren’t terribly sexist/racist, but aren’t exactly the most ‘woke’), are going “Sybil should be fatter and older!” and being torn about the Cherry/Cheery casting. also, some are disappointed that apparently Carrot joins the Watch after Angua does (which, fair! I am too, cuz that just falls into tired old tropes of the dude being better at the thing the woman’s been doing longer than he has.)

rewatched some Classic Who recently

Kinda was good but given that I live in New Zealand, the way the Kinda were dressed but portrayed by mostly white actors was not a good feel. Especially with the general 'colonialism bad' message I got from the story.
Also not a good feel with how they portrayed Hindle's mental instability.

But like. Still a good story, if a little formulaic in regards to the structure and the guest characters, but with interesting elements and ideas that made me eager to watch Snakedance.

Earthshock, a very very good story, especially the last part. Not just because it sees the end of Adric, but because Five does something hasn't done before: attack someone.
Like he tackles a Cyberman, grates gold into its lungs and shoots it. He's not supposed to do that.

But he does.

Snakedance! Not quite as good as Kinda but still solid. Fills out the world building a bit and lays out the origin of the Mara. Which is a nice thematic origin, and thus ripe for reuse.
Evil in human minds given form through psychic resonance? Scary snakes? Sounds perfect. I want to see it in Modern Who, maybe given the Cybermen convergent creation treatment - how some things keep popping up because they're one solution to a problem that's present everywhere.

Listened to, at the last possible day to do so, the rerun of the Good Omens audio drama, and below is the sort of livetweet I did (Sort of not as I didn't tweet as I listened, just added to a drafted thread. Also sort of as some of this is just... notes for fic I’ll never write)

Barely 10 minutes into the radio drama of Good Omens & I'm glad that Crowley isn't quite so thick to have thought that he needed to get pregnant to deliver the antichrist - it's 'up to him to–' and not 'his scene' and 'tool of that glorious destiny'.
It'd make great fic though

The whole thing with the nun going on about how men shouldn't be involved at all in the process [of giving birth] is SQUARELY why I thought the Order was made of lesbians.

Knowing more than a bit of how hard it can be to make gluten-free (or wheat-free) baked goods, but also knowing the satisfaction of making something that someone can eat, I wrote fic about Mary baking Sherlock stuff he hasn't been able to eat since he was diagnosed

Summary:

Mary bakes Sherlock bread and biscuits and little cakes and things he hasn't been able to eat for years. He's happy and pleased and thankful, but mostly, he's content.

It’s a challenge to find the right amount of gums to add to the dough, and she just about gives up and resorts to a baking powder risen quickbread, but eventually Mary has a loaf that doesn’t fall apart. The crumb is a little tender but after use of the electric knife and toaster she can confidently set a plate of three pieces of toast in front of Sherlock.
She nods at his look after he sniffs at a slice, the smell of yeast and a bit of coconut wafting across the table.

"No wheat products," she confirms as Sherlock reaches for the butter.

A smile steals across Mary’s face in response to his as Sherlock takes his first bite of toast in five years.

I may be having feels because, as I read and listen up on Polari due to a little headcanon about Aziraphale using it because Soho and ‘discreet gentleman’s club’, there are some words like queen and cruise that have, for 300+ years more or less kept their meaning amongst gay men.

(Also there was enough of a population in places like London that 300 years ago, you could live in a gay community like today.)

And then Polari has bits borrowed from Italian and some school boy French thrown in too and I’m eyeing Crowley’s ciaos very suspiciously because I could very well imagine him saying something like bona nochy or calling police lillies.
There’s also a delightful ‘translation’ of the Bible done into Polari.

So yes, feels because this is part of (British) gay/queer heritage, and yes it should be recorded and noted as such, and yeah it has problematique elements but the delightful thing is that it’s a language and as such it can change and become more inclusive.

I just... need a day or something to mourn the end of a TV series, a series that was dead before I finished the second, and last, season.

It was Counterpart. A sci-fi series about two parallel worlds and crossing between them: a Cold War era spy game playing out between them, complete with spies, sleeper agents and conspiracies that continued into the now. There was a lesbian assassin struggling to find her identity after killing her Other, a sleeper agent who wanted a life that was uniquely hers and not her Other's. A man who was hard and cruel on one side but soft and cowardly on the other, his wife - who on both sides had a job to do and did it, and the soft, cowardly, man learned to love his wife by loving the other.

There were even other little things beyond the story that endeared the series to me. While it didn't achieve a perfect 50:50 ratio of men to women for both directing and writing, it came very close. The characters & casting, while imperfect too, did have people of colour, who had little backstories and motivations of their own.

( I think the creator must've known that this little, serious, confronting series would not be long lived )

So, my thoughts on the River Song & Master box set, and the shiny brand new Missy set:

The River Song set is a lot of fun. ( The Missy & Crispy stories are the MOST FUN because jealousy )

The Missy boxset? Unlike with the River Song release there is sort of an arc, and as such there is some nice character development. ( It's delicious and intriguing character development. )
