Sneaking around wasn't the easiest way to get where they wanted, but it was the only option.
It was also the only option to get what they wanted.

And technically, it was only one of them so it really wasn't as bad as it seemed.

Okay, so maybe it was in a place of holy worship, though they didn't believe in any type of divine retribution. That was the only thing against them, apart from the psychotic Father and his goons and an over zealous female believer.
It wasn't a temple either, it was just an oversized church.

So you couldn't really say they were sneaking into the temple like a couple of thieves.

They were only going under the cover of night to avoid the aforementioned Father, his goons and the pretty female believer.
And of course so that no one questioned to as why two alchemists were in a church.

It was a lot of trouble to go for to get a puny little ring.
