Eeee~ Tonight's episode of Torchwood was GOOD.
It was the Meat episode, which, when paraphrased, sounds much worse than it actually is.
We had ACTION! ALIENS! COMPLEX EMOTIONAL INTERACTIONS! SEX JOKES!
All in all, your average TW episode. Just ramped up heaps.
Well, except for the complex emotional interactions. And confrontations. It had me alternately cringing, grinning and 'kyaa'-ing. From Tosh's blatantly transparent attempts at chatting Owen up to the awkwardness between Rhys and Jack.
And that just sounded weird, so now I'm going have to do something about either not knowing people called Rhys and Jack or somehow making it sound not as bad as it could be. Because I'm going to keep on talking about the complex emotional interactions...
It was, pretty much, an episode that really highlighted the UST between Cpt. Jack and Gwen. REALLY REALLY. Or maybe not. I can remember three? situations in the episode where it could've gone down the "I'm angry at you, so I'm gonna snog you" path.
And then there was all the part wistful, part longing, part affectionate glances he kept giving her.
I kind of want to ship them [Capt. Jack and Gwen] but... even when I compartmentalise that 'ship into "will never be canon" it just doesn't work.
I suppose it's one of those relationships that just suits the current status. (Just like Aziraphale and Crowley. They could be together, but they're far more awesome NOT.)
Anyway, there was UST there.
And then there was UST between Capt. Jack and Rhys. (See why I had to do something about how I referred to them?)
No, I'm not joking. They were though. There were quotes about about homoerotic situations and Rhys asking Capt. Jack if he wasn't gay by any chance. It was absolutely hilarious.
But still. There was a small amount of UST between the two of them and a more than healthy dose of jealously on Capt. Jack's part. (And again, instead of just wanting to somehow ship Capt. Jack/Ianto/Gwen, I want to add Rhys in the mix somewhere as well.)
And er... is the entire TW crew OBLIVIOUS to Capt. Jack and Ianto being together? There was a scene where they were complaining about how they couldn't have a relationship outside of Torchwood and you could feel they had scripted that part so you'd glare at Capt. Jack and Ianto while they glanced at each other, but no one else sent looks towards either of them!
Ianto's made damn comments about his bedside manner and general other comments about his sex life! And while his jokes are more flowing and developing, they usually aren't of a sexual nature, so that should be some kind of tip off. *growls in frustration at the apparent obliviousness*
Unless of course there is a "no talking about sex with the boss" unsaid rule lurking in the air.
Then there was the fact Capt. Jack was wearing a waistcoat and it looked like one of Ianto's to me. Jack's worn waistcoats before but... this one looked so much more tailored.
Which, I think would mean it'd fit abysmally on him so... maybe their fashion sense is just rubbing off on each other or something. Because Ianto's jacket looked less jacket-like and more greatcoat-ish which doesn't really suit him. I'll still squee over them anyway, because the two of them really suit waistcoats in general.
And suddenly this explains why I like Ishida etc. BECAUSE THEY KNOW HOW TO DRESS WELL. Or have someone to dress them well in the case of CLAMP and their wacky costume designs for Watanuki.
Actually, there was a moment when I thought everyone had switched clothes or something. It was confusing.
Also, completely tangental, I do wonder when either Capt. Jack or Ianto started making moves on the other. There's only a few episodes between Ianto's girlfirend being killed and the stopwatch moment. And the stopwatch moment there had definitely been something beforehand so... just curious.
Back to the episode... there was UST, there was jealously, there was things that made me laugh and be glad that Torchwood is Torchwood and not too many people would look at me oddly if I decided to ship everyone with each other. (Almost, but not quite. I really like Owen and Gwen's relationship now btw, it's so much more comfy and healthy.)
There was also Capt. Jack cuteness when he decided they'd try and 'refloat' the meat alien.
OOOH! And there was kickass!Ianto who was AWESOME. *fangirls*
But err... I don't really want to be near him when he's vengeful and carrying a stun gun. That was kinda scary.
But still awesome.
Anyway... I do wonder how the 'meat' was able to produce that mass from basically... nothing. I don't recall anything about it being fed so it must've been... living off air? (Another case of writers failing to do research I suppose...)
So yes, an all-round awesome episode. A good one that, if TV2 are stopping there, was a good finisher.
But I'm still sending that 'feedback'.
Because they didn't even bother to remove the "next week" teaser from the end. Oooh, how people are gonna complain.
