Jan. 25th, 2009 11:29 pm*is too happy about some fanfictions being updated than should be allowed*
But ahem. Watched Shadow in the North today. My mum is now going to read the books (and I shall re-read them) so she can get the story better. (As I mentioned in a tweet, she needs a summary from either me or my dad to get it sometimes.)
Even though it's been... five-four years since I've read them, I could SWEAR that Sally and Fred got married in one of the last two books. So now I'm all confused~
I liked Fred. Both in the book and in this adaption. And Rosa. Not too sure about Sally and Jim though. Mostly "THEY'RE TOO OLD ASDSK;FLJGD". Okay, for Shadow in the North Billie Piper was okay, as she does a mid-twenties looking girl okay, but not quite a 18-19 girl, even if it IS Sally.
But Jim... I always imagined him to be 16-18 in the first book and maybe mid-twenties at the end of the series.
Poor Matt Smith, he's too old for Jim but possibly too young for the Doctor.
Also, minor hilarity: there was a Mr. Harkness who had epic beard and sideburns. At least, I think it was Harkness. We were watching the first part through the TV, which has lousy quality. Usually doesn't affect the sound though.
My mum commented that all these Dr Who actors were getting publicity and broadening their horizons and landing more roles. Had to explain that the biggest TV producer in Britain is the BBC and of course they're going to want to reuse all their good actors. (Even though all the other ones like ITV and so forth don't seem to mind sharing.)
Also, I find it highly fishy that they (TV 1) decide to show these two Sally Lockhart mysteries two weeks after the announcement of the new Doctor.
On one hand, they're [TVNZ, the company repsonsible for TV 1 and 2) oblivious to how popular Torchwood is or could be, yet they pull this off.
My dad suggested that they may simply have a thing for Billie Piper (and how famous she is because of Doctor Who), which could be true, as they showed another series last year starring her in it.
I still find it fishy though, even though the program is not something another channel would necessarily show. And to have such IMPECCABLE timing. Even if the 'summer season' of shows is over.
ALSO. While I'm on the topic of Dr Who actors, David Tennant randomly bursting out into a song and dance SHOWDOWN in the middle of an arcade against its owner in some weird detective show is... beyond weird.
This happened while I was making Coconut ice cream (which you, T and Rhi, need to try, as it's totally dairy-free) and I stopped paying attention to it for the five-ten minutes it was going on. I WAS MAKING FISH FACES AT THE TV IT WAS SO RANDOM.
I kinda wish I had looked up what the title of the show was...
Just looked it up. David Tennant was guest starring on a show called Blackpool. Also, randomly, Hustle is ♥, I recommend it.
In another fit of Brit TV geekdom/fandomly gushing: Countdown + Tosh = geeky love and her besting Carol, the (former) co-host.
I love that show, even though I'm abysmal at figuring out words THAT quickly.
EDIT: THIS, or this
Tried to find clips with as much of the scene before the random dancing/singing.

Date: 2009-01-25 11:52 pm (UTC)In the first book, Sally's supposed to be 16 and Jim's 13. In the second book, Sally's 22 and Jim's 19. I agree that the ages didn't quite work, but I thought Matt Smith managed to pass for a teenager in The Ruby in the Smoke, if not a 13-year-old. I actually really liked him as Jim, despite the ages not matching, which means I now really want to see the fourth book adapted (Jim/grownup!Adelaide ftw).

Date: 2009-01-26 05:51 am (UTC)Oh, I like him as Jim too (especially the accent! I love the accent) it's just my mind is insisting he should be younger. He did kind of pass as a teenager in RitS, but only just (18-19) and I was much more comfortable with him [and how old he looked] in Shadow in the North.
But to the Jim/older!Adelaide, YES. It was cute enough with little!Adelaide in RitS but I was squeeful over her growing up.
