Trace Memory
Mar. 10th, 2009 02:39 pmThis Torchwood novelisation is a weird one. It’s not monster of the week-ish and while it is a time-travelling story, it’s not told from the linear perspective of the time traveller, rather it’s told from the people around him.
That being said, it isn’t too confusing as to what is happening where. There’s quite a few tells that it’s someone’s first meeting but the other’s is their second. Everything gets tied up in the end too, with bits of the present linking up to the past.
It’s also weird, because we get author-imagined backstory. And I have to say, toddler!Tosh is adorable.
Um… I found it quite boring to read, except for Tosh and Ianto’s tales of the past, until I hit the two thirds mark or so, when we see Jack’s part in Michael’s story. Then it got interesting. But I also kind of whined, because the author went a made Michael and Jack sleep together. Mostly because I’m fed up with time-travellers sleeping together. That and it reminds me vaguely of Making History. Except there are no Nazis.
There are Russians though.
Whooo! Comment time!
The beginning starts off boringly for Torchwood, which I kind of like, except Capt. Jack is a bit out of character telling Gwen to go off and do ‘couply stuff’ with Rhys and washing the Torchwood SUV. Ianto’s being geeky and has fun dialogue with Jack including a discussion about nicknames.
And what is it with time-travelling in the Whoverse and drums?! (The thing that’s making Michael, the time-traveller in this story, go back and forth in time, is described as going off like a bass drum.)
Owen’s story was a bit boring to me, but I did find how his inner medic lectured him on being drunk while the human part suffered from its hangover amusing. Also, the goth girl in Hello Kitty pyjamas.
Then there’s Toshiko’s story, which is too adorable for words as she’s five in it. But, but, I do wonder about the Aizen festival mentioned. Anyway, she’s adorable and there’s far too much foreshadowing for her future. (There’s the fairytale about the man who wished to live forever and the fact her favourite program, Sciene Ninja Team Gatchaman (which is an actual show I believe) has five superheroes who fight monsters and that she wanted to be a member.)
Gwen’s is amusing, mostly because of the Marmite. Well, Rhys and his Marmite. That and the throwaway comment that Gwen has always wanted to be a police officer, except when she was six and wanted to be She-Ra.
I don’t know why Owen is laughing over Tosh saying ‘coccyx’. Well, I do, but he’s a doctor.
Ianto’s story isn’t that interesting, but the end of it is amusing, which was about what he had for dinner.
Also, who the hell wears a pink tie? Varying shades of red, purple, violet, fuchsia, yes, but straight out pink? Like pastel Barbie pink?
(I have seen a few ties in shops that colour, but not someone actually wearing one.)
Hmmm… there are mentions of Rhys cooking spaghetti as ‘sorry’ food and Ianto kind of going “I can’t really stop you going off and sleeping with people, so I’m not even going to try” except the author used too many italics and it looks as if Ianto is really hurt that he can’t stop Jack from doing that.
Also, croissants. And a 96 year old saying Capt. Jack’s a “handsome devil” is hilarious for some reason.
Hmm… dying in each other’s arms is a bit cliché, but I suppose it does its job. And what the hell is it with Torchwood and it’s cars? Unless that’s one of the constants of the universe or something.
