grassangel: a smiling Thirteenth Doctor with a flower behind her ear (yay)

I got to watch ‘Waters of Mars’ last Sunday.
And it was good. As good as people were saying.

Except now I REALLY hope the Master takes the Doctor down a peg. (Is that still a spoiler? I know I first heard of sightings of Catherine Tate and John Simm being on the DW set near the beginning of the year.) And that Donna returns to awesomeness. Just, you know, as a general sort of thing. And also because she kind of needs to take the Doctor down a peg too, as he was magnificently asshatish towards the end.
A type of asshattery that he had previously told her he couldn’t do and would completely screw up time if he did.

Because as wonderful as David Tennant’s performance of the Doctor realising he’s the last Time Lord and that he DOESN’T have to adhere to their rules of not interfering with fixed points in time was… it was also ABSOLUTELY TERRIFYING. Even more so than the water zombies. I thought he was about to go all Master-y on us with his “TIMELORD VICTORIOUS” spiel.
I never want to see the Doctor go like that again, which is why I hope the Master and Donna both knock him down a peg.

Which means I was kind of relieved when Adelaide offed herself in order to preserve history, even though she would’ve been labelled as a deserter and coward for not being on Mars when the base blew up. Because it at least made scared the Doctor come to his senses long enough to GET THE HELL OUT OF THERE before he could do more damage.
So, despite not being as brilliant and fun as the other fifty or so minutes, the last ten minutes were EXTREMELY GOOD, even if they were horrifying and kind of out of character but brilliantly acted.

The other fifty minutes? Pretty good.
The ensemble cast were GREAT and did a wonderful job of buoying up the episode on excellent acting. Perhaps it was just the fact they had to be terrified by droplets of water, but they did a great job. Especially the gadget guy and the girl who locked herself in that video room. So was the bearded second in command guy. I absolutely loved the Russian nurse’s accent, which was absolutely OTT but really fun.
Those droplets of water by the way? A fairly decent plot as well, even though I didn’t fancy the water zombies too much. (Although I do kind of love the little tangent the Doctor goes on about the Ancient Martians locking up something in the ice caps.) And well… I do take issue with the end, as I’ve made clear, even though I didn’t see it coming.

The liberal agenda is also worked into the script. It's quite amusing watching the Doctor go on about how in the past fourty years (it's set in 2051 or so) the human race has managed to survive an oil apocalypse and global warming and overpopulation. It would warm my heart if it weren't so OBVIOUS. (Except, what other apocalyptic events are there that the writers could use that aren't completely out of the blue?)
It was cute though.

Incidentally, I rewatched ‘The Unicorn and the Wasp’ the day previous. There was a whole slew of memory related things in there and I do wonder if it was meant as subtle little hints to TSE and JE and possible fixits. I mean genetic locks one memories? Those memories then being accessed? And then another way of shutting away memories… I mean really.

And I bring this up because DONNA'S COMING BACK FOR THE LAST TWO SPECIALS! Yay!
So is Wilfred by the way. I love him almost as much as I do Donna. (And I want a Last of The Summer Wine crossover with him. It'd be utterly awesome.)

T, Rhi, we didn't record it on the HDR so er... I hope you watched it when it was on.
