YATN – Bay of the Dead
Apr. 14th, 2010 11:30 amStraight forward commentary this time on things I found funny or liked or otherwise found noteworthy. I can’t be bother with anything else.
There are quite a few of these moments in Bay of The Dead. I assume this is because it’s pretty much Torchwood + zombies. Of the non-Owen kind.
Other points of note is that it is very Ianto/Jack and Gwen/Rhys. Also, Rhys gets to be a hero and is very much a pseudo team member. Which is always fun, as he is my third favourite character in the entire series. (And second favourite post-S2)
Sergeant Swanson makes another appearance. On the same page as some bystanders saying that Jack could enter their ‘restricted zone any day’. This is somewhat related to that fact in that apparently there is great UST between Swanson and Jack, which just makes me go ‘bwuh’ and apparently makes Ianto confused about whether Jack is joking and if he should be jealous or not.
There is a lengthy character commentary about Horlicks. This is rather amusing.
I have mentioned that Rhys gets to be a hero, right? Well he gets an early start in this book. While Gwen has her gun… he has a previously useless golf club. AWESOME.
Yes Ianto, suggest headlamps for the team. Because everyone needs more flashlights, especially ones on their head. *family injoke*
It also seems that there was never a medic and tech expert hired after Tosh and Owen because Jack was always ‘working on it’. That and there is foreshadowing/referencing to CoE, in that neither Jack or Ianto know what would happen if Jack got destroyed/eaten and there was very little to regenerate from.
The Bekaran deep tissue scanner is referred to. All this book needs is some reference to some term like ‘slimed’ as a ‘technical term’ to be full of… references.
There also seem to be a lot of CoE references. I am not sure if this is because these are the last novels that have been written with the core Torchwood team still intact or if it’s just ‘cos they’re the latest ones written. But anyway, Gwen is mumsy and is great with a kid. Rhys obviously observes this scene and comments on it.
AND RHYS SAVES THE DAY. By calling in a favour from a person called ‘Nobby’, who apparently owed him because he was quite about something involving wine and a waitress…
He also gets called Gwen’s responsibility, but I personally think he awesome just by himself and doesn’t need Gwen to look after him. (Much.)
Also, hidden reserves of kink! Which is slightly squicky, but a bit less than, again, CoE.
The book ends with Gwen and Jack doing their thing, visiting the grave of the poor person who had to die to save Cardiff. Which seems to happen in half of these books (Jack and Gwen doing a tie-up together, not attending a funeral) and by which I am slightly annoyed, except that Gwen is the Audience Stand-in and Jack is The Man with Answers.
