Why did I not know that Anthony Horowitz has been chosen to write a new Sherlock Holmes novel?
But but but, guh. He knows how to write detective stories. I believe this will turn out better than that Winnie-the-Pooh 'sequel'. Also, Conan Doyle's estate is pretty nifty and rather cool and (used to, at least) send back IC letters if you sent them stuff asking about Sherlock Holmes. This makes them more awesome than most authors' estates (except maybe J. R. R. Tolkien's, because his family was/is actually kind of supportive of his writing, unlike every one elses' family, who got terribly embarrassed as kids) so I would think they know what they're doing.

In other news, I am terribly distraught that the largest bookstore (which sucks, because it only stocks bestsellers and has a pitiful fantasy selection) in NZ may be shutting down. Whitcoulls was apparently bought out some time ago by the Borders some time ago, and so is facing the same thing as its parent company. Which is bad, because how else is the library going to get their books? The answer would obviously be 'the internet, where everyone else now gets their books' but bookstores at least help publicise books somewhat. Even if my local library (the Lower Hutt one, but Wellington is pretty good too) is pretty savvy on the whole good books thing. Yeah, they do have ten copies of the Twilight series, but they also have three copies of The Doctrine of Labyrinths. (Even though Cherie Priest and Cat Valente make no appearance in their catalogue. Ooops.)
BUT ANYWAY, the reason I bring this up is because I have fifty dollars on a gift card and needed to figure out what books I wanted and was ambivalating between "Howl's Moving Castle" and "Ironside". I was very tempted to go "Ironside" because it would kind of match thematically with "Legal Drug; volume 2" and "Corambis", but decided that 'fashion-concious' was just as good as 'flamboyant' and decided on HMC.
Meanwhile, my mum is getting those Steig Larsson novels because you need to spend a dollar for every dollar on those gift cards. :/ (Oh look, by virtue of being backlist, my four choices are only $5 more.)

In regards to the horrible earthquake in New Zealand that you may have heard about: I do not live in Christchurch and all/most of the people I know who have family and friends there have confirmed they are safe. The whole event is rather alarming and concerning though, especially because Christchurch isn't a city built on volcanoes or numerous multiple fault lines. And makes me wish there were an adjusted Richter scale that takes into account the depth of an earthquake.
I am also terribly sad that the Christchurch Cathedral is in ruins.

It looks like you guys are over a subduction zone, though, which also causes earthquakes. As the heavier, colder, and more brittle oceanic plate subducts under the Australia plate, it bends and cracks, causing earthquakes.

But it's good to know you and your friends are safe. ♥

The subdustion zone is by the North Island. The plate boundary runs through the South Island (where the earthquate occurred) but there's no subduction occurring there, only side-to-side motion. That does also cause earthquakes, but Christchurch wasn't considered high risk - the fault that ruptured was one the geologists didn't know about because it was buried under river gravels and hadn't had a quake in something like 16,000 years.
Sorry for the nitpick, but I'm a geology student and like to see people getting this stuff accurate.

I was waiting for you to come and say something about this. And if you didn't, I would've prodded you to explain better.

Oh no no, by all means, let me know if I've got it wrong. I'm a Japanese linguistics major and my geology experience amounts to one class about volcanoes, so I welcome all corrections. XD

Howl's Moving Castle: Always an excellent choice.

Glad to hear you and your family are safe! <3

It really is a tragedy...;_;

What a shame about the bookstore! Even chain stores have more personality than websites, and it's not as if one can have community gatherings at Borders.com.

I'm glad that you (even though you don't live in Christchurch in the first place) and everyone you know is safe, and hope that the 100+ missing are found as soon as possible. Has the cause of the quake been determined yet?

It seems like it was on another fault to the last one (last September) but that one probably triggered it, so it was sort of an aftershock. It may have been a splinter fault - I'm not sure. There's all sort if tectonic stuff going on in NZ, so it gets pretty complicated.

I am fairly sure half the sales the Wellington branch have in the manga section are from cosplayers using the space to meet up in.
