predictably, I got a survey asking my opinions on the announcement of 13.
and to document the good fight and all, the three questions and responses are below
Please tell us what you think of Jodie Whittaker being cast as the Thirteenth Doctor
Absolutely delighted! A bit bitter it hadn’t happened earlier in the history of Doctor Who (though I wouldn’t give up Peter Capaldi’s Doctor for the world) but ultimately happy and excited about this decision and hope that Doctor Who can continue to be progressive and exciting in other future casting.
(Am I being a bit passive aggressive with that last bit? Probably. Am I talking about future Doctors or companions? Yes. Also just realised that this would’ve been the perfect space to mention that once again I’ve not watched much/any of the actor’s previous work, though I do recognise that it’s been good work.)
Hopes for the Christmas special
A resolution to Twelve’s emotional journey of someone who didn’t quite want to exist but now doesn’t want to abandon what they’ve done and achieved, and how that influences the regeneration. Also I want to see Bill and Missy again, enough so I’d be happy even if it were just flashbacks and not part of the timeline within the special.
(I don’t know why this question seeing as it’s almost all shot and in the can, even though I know editing can do utter magic to narrative.)
And what are your hopes for Jodie Whittaker’s first series as the Doctor - series 11?
More of the delicacy and depth that series 10 had in it’s writing, acting and directing. There was a great deal of care taken with Bill’s character and identity, as well as the Doctor and Missy’s relationship, and I’d really like to see that attention to detail and compassion for the characters carried through. A great working relationship between Jodie Whittaker and whoever is cast as her companion/s. An all female Team TARDIS, at least for a few episodes. And some variety amongst companions if there’s more than one. A hijabi for companion?
Talking through my tags: I don't think I could ever communicate how delighted I am in the tone of writing series 10 took as a whole.
Series 9 was generally decent but the 2-parters had pacing issues and the prequel/sequel sets often had a somewhat jarring disconnect between the parts. I think it was being a bit ambitious trying to mesh Clara's journey with the structure of the series.
I do think it's a shame that two of the more Bill-centric episodes (Knock Knock and Lie of the Land) were kind of floppy, but otherwise: absolutely stellar.
Also burying my tag for this because I'm pretty certain at least two of the people who run the Consumer panel are likely to have tumblrs. Even though I'm sure they're very professional and don't search their work (or if they do it's for their work and so largely restricted to the main tags) (now kinda wondering if the fan/consumer panel works at all with the DW Fan Show)
