The Tumblr implosion is giving me hella anxiety, but please say hi if you're coming over here from there. (also, a lot of this is archived LJ entries from the mid-00s. I didn't do a brilliant job of crossposting from tumblr to here.)

If you aren't from tumblr or another place I might recognise you, hi. I'm grassangel, sometimes know as Song of Storm and Fire or variations upon, or Chloe. I'm in my late 20s, am queer (ace/bi) and use she/her pronouns.
My subscription/access policy is that personal stuff, whinge/whine posts, and stuff I don't want getting bandied about the internet are generally locked. If I recognise you/you have brilliant opinions/we've been chatting a bit, I'll add you to the access list. Same goes for subscribing to you really as well, though due to the format if you're a high volume poster I'm not likely to.

I doubt if you've gotten this far if you are, but if you're a TERF/SWERF, other exclusionary forms of feminism, exclusionist/queerphobe, anti-shipper/fandom policer or in general a bigot of any stripe, do not follow me. I am not a person whose opinions you will enjoy and I have no tolerance for your opinions either.

The one thing I don't like about participating in democracy beyond voting in elections by writing emails to ministers and making submissions on Bills and their amendments, is that there's an awful lot of research and essay writing.
And unhappily you DON'T get a grade on it afterwards, or even comments on it from peers, so even though it's an awful lot like school work, you get none of the nice social recognition stuff for doing any of it

I mean there is the reward of helping the good thing get through or making sure the bad thing doesn't, but it's not nearly so satisfying as writing fic is. Or even poetry which you don't let anyone else see!

(Speaking of, I should research NZ magazines and such that publish poetry as somehow I find myself with lots of pieces that I quite like, but they are short and I only should research them, which means I won't)

Ooof, things have obvious er... gotten hot enough about The Watch casting that Rhianna Pratchett had to state she’s no longer personally involved (though Narrativia is)

and my thoughts are sort of generally in line with this post, which is that while I am glad that the casting is diverse and am cheering that the actors got the parts, I am very very much looking askance at the casting director and producers for the particular choices they made for which characters. Like yay for a non-binary actor, but why not a trans woman actress? And I do sincerely hope that Sybil casting is only one half of the character’s casting and they’re keeping the time travel/alternate universes bit so that this is only a young Sibyl. (Never mind that Carcer should be a mirror of Vimes, just like Lily is that of Esme.)

Anyway, I’ll just be here, examining the questions I was asked when the BBC fan panel did surveys about the series and moaning that while I’d only mentioned Angel Coulby because I wanted to mention at least one other name, she’d actually be quite good

eta: And apparently even dudes who play MPQ (so a generally decent bunch of middle-aged, mostly white men who aren’t terribly sexist/racist, but aren’t exactly the most ‘woke’), are going “Sybil should be fatter and older!” and being torn about the Cherry/Cheery casting. also, some are disappointed that apparently Carrot joins the Watch after Angua does (which, fair! I am too, cuz that just falls into tired old tropes of the dude being better at the thing the woman’s been doing longer than he has.)

Mimins on tumblr asked me:

would you please #critical fandom thought or #meta about the doctor vs crowley&az wrt individual humans? i feel like the doctor is much better about them. i also feel like they're much better about humanity but i am less sure on that mark.

I am Unsure if I can live up to those lofty tags categories, but I conceive of the difference between the two as thus:
Aziraphale & Crowley are what could've happened if the Doctor had run away from Gallifrey with the Master (with or without Susan) )

I may be having feels because, as I read and listen up on Polari due to a little headcanon about Aziraphale using it because Soho and ‘discreet gentleman’s club’, there are some words like queen and cruise that have, for 300+ years more or less kept their meaning amongst gay men.

(Also there was enough of a population in places like London that 300 years ago, you could live in a gay community like today.)

And then Polari has bits borrowed from Italian and some school boy French thrown in too and I’m eyeing Crowley’s ciaos very suspiciously because I could very well imagine him saying something like bona nochy or calling police lillies.
There’s also a delightful ‘translation’ of the Bible done into Polari.

So yes, feels because this is part of (British) gay/queer heritage, and yes it should be recorded and noted as such, and yeah it has problematique elements but the delightful thing is that it’s a language and as such it can change and become more inclusive.

It’s apparently pitch season, so two concepts were sent my way. One interesting, one not.

One was about football. Sports things are not that interesting to me, but hey, a female aspiring coach, a foreign player and a potentially gay character are somewhat interesting to me and I made that feeling clear, saying that I would like the diversity and range of stories told and that those characters were the ones I was most interested in.

Second was about Noor Inayat Khan, which was much more interesting.

grassangel: a smiling Thirteenth Doctor with a flower behind her ear (Doctor Who)
I’m struck with a sudden and poignant longing for Donna Noble as a companion. Well, not that sudden, as it’s been a thing for a couple of months with my MPQ alliance mates that there are Wrong™ opinions about companions with the two camps being roughly anti-Donna and pro-Donna.

But what I miss most about Donna is that she was treated as an equal, a peer. Or rather, she demanded that treatment, because the series sure as hell didn’t let her forget she was just a human. She pushed and pulled at the Doctor in the best ways whilst being so utterly platonic and practical with him.

I think that’s what I mourn most for post-season 10 with Missy.
Yes, Bill’s relationship with the Doctor was delightfully platonic, but it was still very much a student/teacher relationship and all the power imbalance it contains doesn’t facilitate Bill questioning the Doctor’s actions that much. There’s flickers of that dynamic being questioned in episodes like The Pyramid at the End of the World and Thin Ice, where Bill either directly calls the Doctor out or completely overrules him, but it wasn’t with the regularity that Donna did. Like literally there’d be a point in just about every Donna episode where she’d confront him about something: to be more kind, to save someone, to understand better.
There’s something of that confrontational relationship with Clara, but it wasn’t platonic and it constantly felt like they were trying to one up each other and prove themselves to be the best.

Which Donna didn’t. She knew what she was capable of, and while the Doctor did have to push her limits at times, it wasn’t about either of their egos.

I wanted Missy to be the friend that the Doctor needs, the peer who keeps him in check and makes him consider his actions fully, the one who declines certain adventures because they're boring or because the slime lions really are disgusting. I wanted Missy to be that companion that the Doctor could bounce off of, because they know each other, because they can work together.

And like... I wish we could've seen that half season's worth of the Doctor and Missy working alongside one another, being friends who have each others back. I kind of hope that Chibnall will see that's what the Doctor needs and will give Thirteen a solid partner, a good friend and ally, an equal. (And as I write that, I just want him to give her Missy. Just give Thirteen Missy and I'd be happy.)

Because gods, I want the Doctor to have a friend again.
