grassangel: Dream and Death from Sandman, sitting on some steps surrounded by pigeons (this is my angst icon)
Today, something disatrous happened.

My phone's screen broke. Which kind of happens when you accidentally step on it.
But now the screen is quite fractured and while Obento (my phone's name, which I hardly ever use, but seems easier to use for the purposes of this entry) is fully functional, I can't READ half of what is on the screen.
Well, unless I tilt it towards a light source at a precise angle and the contrast between text and background is sufficient.

BUT. She is broken. My lovely Obento is broken. She was a wonderful Nokia 6288, all slidy and not a flip top. (I can't stand flip tops and after Obento, I think I'm spoiled for standard handsets.)
She's gotten through being dropped on concrete, damp shower hands and being slipped down my top. I'm going to miss her, if she can't get fixed.

But yes, my dad's going to see if she can get fixed first. And if it will cost less than $650, she will be, otherwise I'll be getting a new phone and I shall viscerally miss Obento.
If I do have to end up choosing a new phone... well, that'd be hard. It was hard when I was choosing Obento and it'll be hard this time too. I can't get a clone of her, as they aren't available in New Zealand anymore (Asia is a different matter altogether) and the nearest is kind of shit. I say kind of, because that's pretty much what you get for paying $650 (retail price) for a handset over here.

*checks TradeMe*
Oh wait, you can get a replacement LCD screen for only $85, so here's hoping that she can get repaired cheaply!
And even then, my replacement phones are much cheaper there too, as well as Obento clones. So hurrah for auction sites! (Although, I'm surprised no one is listing that phones are Vodafone, Telecom XT AND 2degree compatible. Just the first two at the moment.)

Oh, and tomorrow I have a big assessment for my course. *is nervous and sad and anxious and kind of utterly horrible in general*
*gets to use a shiny new icon*

grassangel: a pastel and cute cat balancing a multi-coloured ball on its head (never mind)
Eh, for the past couple of weeks I’ve been kind of meh. Been pottering around baking and doing some school work here and there, as well as doing some sewing. Made a dent in the pile, but then the wind in my sails stalled and it’s all meh.

Meeting up with people on Sunday was good though. Although the book I gain from that wander around Wellington means I should really get rid of some of the books I don’t like on my bookshelf.
Don’t suppose anyone can tell me if Terry Goodkind’s book “Confessor” is any good and I should try reading it, even though I haven’t read the others?
If not, I’m selling it and a couple of other books my grandmother got me and I read once before shelving it away. Not any of the books I actually liked though.

Watched the Doctor Who Easter Special on this Monday, which was Queen’s Birthday Monday. )

Other lessons learnt from TV is that the writers of Bones, or possibly the editors who cut together the previews for the channel it shows on, are really really really pushing the Booth/Bones envelope. (NZ is a month or so behind in episodes, it’s the one right after the mascot murder one. You should know the one I'm talking about.)
Also, if you are going to fake archaeological finds, at least stratify them will you? Salting brooches willy-nilly over a farm is not how you hoax things up.
grassangel: Ichihara Yuuko from xxxHOLiC, sitting and smoking (Yuuko)
Oh Watanuki, you are such a shonen hero.

And OSHIT, I hope this doesn't mean Yuuko/Watanuki is kind of canon...

... TT__TT Yuuko~ *wails*
We still don't know what your wish is though...

ETA: Also, because a friendspost reminded me of this, the National government of New Zealand is planning on abolishing trial by jury for all but the most important cases. My reaction to this is a violent NO. Trial by jury means we don't get corrupt judges. Trial by jury means that a judgement is reached by a consensus of OTHER citizens and not just one person who may or may not have an agenda.
If they want people to get out of jury service, just put in more loopholes. (Most juries are already skewed anyway, so I don't see much point in this. It's rare for a person to be called to jury duty more than once in five years.)

I read that gender-switch novelisation, Almost Perfect. It is possibly crack squared. Maybe fanfiction squared with the amount of, for lack of a better word, fanservice. This book amuses me on that meta-level so much and I do have to wonder if the author knows about the fandom at all.
(There is a short chapter which is titled ‘Jack is in for a treat when he checks the CCTV’ and starts with Gwen and gender-switched!Ianto waking up from their nap on the sofa together. If that, aside from Gwen’s hair chewing, isn’t fanservice, I don’t know what is.)

Anyway, disappointingly, Ianto is simply body switched with a woman, rather than being changed into one. It also takes half the book to get to WHY he was body switched in the first place.
It has to do with aliens. Gay aliens in fact, although they may just be sexless and chose forms at random. Actually the body switch also seems to involve the aliens’ artifact, which renders stuff perfect.
Also, the aliens responsible are worse than Jack when it comes to… things, which isn’t exactly going to calm those snorfles of laughter but at least won’t make you shake your head when it comes to the oblique references of them and Jack together or the room of bodies.

Ianto gets to save the day though, which is always nice, and gets only one night of body-switched!sex before he returns to normal.
The epilogue is made of awesome by the way, as the alien artifact is pretending to be the Doctor and Jack talks to it and it’s only really good because imagining the dialogue in their voices is hilarious.

There are other bits of fun and Ianto's bisexuality is highlighted several times... )

And as I’m posting this, I suddenly feel sad that TONIGHT IS THE LAST EPISODE OF SEASON TWO. I know that TVNZ wanted to air the third season right after, but I’m looking at the Wikipedia page and it’s saying the airdate for the UK is June or July.
So yeah, sad that the TV season is ‘finished’ and the story is put on hold, if only for a little while.

Wait... reading [livejournal.com profile] ashura_sama's spoilers made me realise something.

HOLiC AND TRC ARE SET IN ONE HUGE AU. (This is if you believe that for every decision made, a new universe is formed.)

Syaoran's decision split what should've happened from what did happen.
So somewhere out there, there's a universe where everything happened as it should. Whether that's good or not, I'm not sure.

BUT WE HAVE LEGIT REASON FOR FICCING THAT UNIVERSE.

Even if Watanuki doesn't really exist there... or maybe he does. The whole thing confuses me as only mutiple universes do.

I also have this nagging idea that FWR is actually Syaoran from the future trying to prevent his past self from doing everything in a kind of self-fufilling prophecy kind of way.

In other news, I'm totally freaking out over applying to Massey university.

UGH
